Thank you, minimum wage (among other things).
Are you young and looking for work? You’re in good company.
Just 54 percent of Americans ages 18 to 24 currently have jobs, according to a study released Thursday by the Pew Research Center. That’s the lowest employment rate for this age group since the government began keeping track in 1948. And it’s a sharp drop from the 62 percent who had jobs in 2007 — suggesting the recession is crippling career prospects for a broad swath of young people who were still in high school or college when the downturn began.
“They had the misfortune to be born at a time that would dump them into this labor market as young people,” said Heidi Shierholz, a labor market economist at the Economic Policy Institute. “If we stay on the track that we’re on, this cohort is not going to outpace their parents.”
this ain’t news… it’s been beef-a-roni for three fucking years now. and “minimum wage” ? are you fucking retarded?? 40 hour week x 50 weeks x $7.25 = $14,500 per year.
but if you cut that minimum wage in half, you could hire two people for the same price and cut the unemployment in half!!! yippeee!! now you have two people raking in over $7,000 each for a years labor—not bad if you live in angola. but hey “unemployment“‘s down and that’s all that matters. problem solved.
power button sticky, no remote, can’t turn the damn thing off— just throw a brick through your tv. problem solved!!! jesus christ.
You do realize that when you force businesses to pay entry-level workers MORE for entry-level jobs, they have no choice but to fire other workers so they don’t lose money? Therefore, unemployment continues to rise because businesses can’t afford to pay entry-level workers above a certain wage.
Entry-level jobs aren’t meant to be life-long. They’re not meant to be high-paying, cushy careers. Which is why so many young people tend to do them, for gas and pocket money, until they find a better-paying job after getting sufficient experience in the workplace.
stop the fucking presses. so, $14 grand a year is a “high-paying, cushy-career” now?? this is news.
well I guess it would be if you were 12, but there are laws against that—but, you’re right, education is a privilege, so let’s get rid of those pesky child-labor laws while we’re at it. and $290 for a 40 hour work-week is pretty steep. if we eliminated the 40 hour work week and the minimum wage, we could get two 12 year olds working twice the hours for the same price. eliminate the 40 hour work-week cap and shit, we could just have kids encamped in the work-building. I love it. ignorant, feral little kids stocking shelves, and washing dishes, awesome, they’d be like little work pets. I think you guys are on to something.
NOW THIS IS SOME FUCKING NEWS!!! 2012 TO 1860 HERE WE COME!!!
let me be clear, I understand you come to these conclusions by way of your “libertarian” ideology — the only problem with that, is that it is stupefyingly short-sighted, and willfully blind to the long-term consequences. we didn’t start out with child-labor laws, we saw the injustice, the social-ills and enacted them to correct a horrible situation. we didn’t start with a 40 hour work week or a minimum wage either, people were indentured slaves, and organized themselves out of a life of pure misery—by enacting those particular laws. this “organizing” may be an affront to your “freedom” to indenture or enslave those you are capable of doing so to, but fuck you, this process of righting wrongs and creating a better, healthier, society is freedom in action. you can convince yourself that you are being oppressed from having the opportunity to oppress others, but that’s precisely why you can’t get more than 10% of any libertarian vote, because that’s the percentage of people who are either cruel, retarded, or naive combined. nobody wants your version of “freedom” because it’s dystopian and terrible, sorry. ”but you won’t know until you try it.” bullshit, we were there 150 years ago, and guess what, it doesn’t work. unregulated markets result in monopolies, cartels, and cruel living conditions for the masses—innocent bystanders at the whim of those few with massive unyielding power. it’s an abomination. you can yap about freedom all you want, but you’re critical thinking obviously stops well short of the reality of such policies. it’s evident in your argument above, forcing businesses to pay a base-line pay for entry-level work will cause you to FIRE more skilled positions?? nobody fires the people who actually make their business money, and that’s anybody other than entry-level employees. have you ever run a business?? do you know the first thing about it? obviously not. at worst, your argument could be, with a minimum wage you are limited to the number of entry-level positions your business can have. true, but then we’ve come full-circle, anything less than the current minimum $290/week isn’t employment it’s slavery… where in america can you actually live off that? in a fucking tent city walking distance to your work-camp that’s where. short-sighted, but hey at least the unemployment numbers look better, right.
